Tales From Te Papa

Showcasing the wonderful and significant pieces held in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

An inside tour through the collections of New Zealand’s National Museum.

This fascinating series of mini-documentaries originally for TVNZ, partners with our national museum Te Papa Tongarewa to educate the public on the wider collection not always seen in the public galleries.

We created and produced 120 mini-documentaries that deliver entertainment and education wrapped into one. Each Tale From Te Papa is a nugget of detail from the vast collection held by our national museum.

Presented by Simon Morton and Riria Hotere, family audiences can journey through the public and private sections of Te Papa, learning from passionate curators and researchers about the value and careful preservation of a huge range of collection items. The 120 short reports uncover hidden treasures that all have rich histories, special conservation status and passionate community and whānau members who care for them.

Simon and Riria lead viewers on an ‘insider's guided tour’ to learn secrets of the first dinosaur fossil ever discovered, and Te Papa's most famous bike helmet. They discover unique spider species, are inspired by famous paintings and quirky jewellery, get to grips with fearsome weapons and armour from the Pacific, and uncover the deep and personal stories of Māori taonga. The weird and the wonderful, from priceless to paper-thin, the whole collection is on show.
