Commemorating the first ships leaving Australia and NZ for WWI
The Convoy Table sits in a light-filled viewing room overlooking King George Sound where ANZAC forces shipped out for WWI. It is a contemplative, serene space that honours the sacrifice of the Australia & New Zealand Army Corps.
We were proud to return to the National ANZAC Centre in WA six years after the success of our opening exhibition, to redevelop an experience where visitors uncover stories about the ships and soldiers of the ANZAC convoys.
OUR SOLUTION
The Convoy Table is a large-scale touch table, and robust evolution of the original experience. It is an array of 3 x 55-inch screens, with a bespoke touch-frame, integrated into handcrafted cabinetry with embedded fiducial readers. The improved software supports long-term operations and updates in (near) real time.
OUR ROLE
The cabinetry, AV technology, refreshed user interface and content management systems were completely redeveloped, then installed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Gibson Group used its extensive network of Western Australia suppliers to ensure the solution could be installed safely and remotely.
THE DETAILS
Together with the City of Albany, who operate the Centre, and Western Australian Museum, who provided curatorial support, Gibson Group rebuilt the Convoy Table from the ground up.
Our team hand built new cabinetry incorporating fiducial readers to improve interactivity. The redeveloped look and feel of the user interface complemented the overall graphic style of the exhibition.
Similar to our Character Post & Tribute Wall experiences at the Centre, the Convoy Table illuminates the personal stories of the men and women who served. Visitors can search their names, uncover photos and information, along with their place on the first and second convoys.
